Winter Module 2001 Museum Assignment

Museum Assignment is due no later than February 14, 2001

REMEMBER: You will need to save your Museum Receipt
and Museum Button! Papers without these will not be accepted.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 82nd Street at Fifth Avenue, NYC

Your mission is to make a pilgrimage to one of the world's greatest art collections--the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While there, spend some time exploring the galleries. Choose two works from DIFFERENT TIME PERIODS OR CULTURES but of the same subject, theme, or idea (landscape, portrait, history painting, sculpture, mythological or religious painting, genre scenes, etc.). They do not need to be identical, but should both express a similar idea in different ways. Choose your works carefully--be creative, intelligent, and insightful. Compare the two works visually, thematically, psychologically, and/or philosophically. Consider: How has the artist of each work expressed the subject? How is each work related to the time period in which it was created?

REMEMBER!!!: YOUR TWO WORKS MUST BE FROM TWO DIFFERENT TIME PERIODS (such as the Baroque and the Renaissance) OR STYLES (such as Romanticism and Neoclassicism or Cubism and Impressionism)! SHOW ME THAT YOU CAN FIND SIMILARITIES BETWEEN DIFFERENT TIMES, CULTURES, and IDEAS!!!

You will be given a handout which you use to complete the assignment. Remember, the assignment is due on or before FEBRUARY 14, 2001. If you have any questions about the assignment, feel free to talk to me or email me at the email link on the home page. GOOD LUCK, and enjoy yourself at the Museum--it's a great way to spend a day in Manhattan.
